According to Law no 4251/2014 the possibility of granting a residence permit is provided to third-country nationals who are family members of a Greek citizen. These citizens are granted a “Residence Card of a Greek Family Member” as a separate document, provided that they permanently reside in Greece. In order to apply for the granting of a residence permit of this type, the foreigner must be legally in Greece, i.e., either having entered with a uniform entry visa or an entry visa of limited territorial validity, or to reside legally with a permanent or temporary residence permit (uniform format residence permit, residence permit from another Member State, blue certificate, special certificate of legal residence, International Organization for Migration (IOM), card of recognized beneficiary of international protection, the international protection applicant’s card). The issuance of this specific residence card does not require an administrative fee payment and its duration is five years.
Family members of a Greek citizen are considered to be: a) the spouse regardless of citizenship, b) the direct ascendants of the Greek citizen, as well as those of the spouse, regardless of citizenship, as long as they are financially supported by the Greek citizen, c) Greek citizen’s adult children who do not have Greek citizenship, as well as the spouse’s children, who are either under 21 years old, or are financially supported by him, regardless of their age and d) any other member of the Greek citizen’s family, regardless of citizenship, as long as he/she is financially supported by him/her, or lives under his roof, or if serious health reasons make his/her personal care absolutely necessary.
