Third-country citizens who legally reside in Greece, have the possibility to obtain a residence permit, which provides the right to work in the European Union. The conditions for obtaining long-term resident status are the following:
The third-country citizen who resides in Greece, legally and continuously, for five (5) years before the date of submission of the relevant application, is granted the status of long-term resident, if the following conditions are cumulatively met: a) has an income, sufficient for himself and his family’s needs, which does not come from the country’s social assistance system. This income cannot be less than the minimum annual wage, in accordance with national legislation, increased by 10% for all the dependent family members, including any amount derived from regular unemployment benefit. The contributions of family members are considered, when calculating the income. The regular nature of the income is proven by the fulfillment of his insurance and tax obligations. b) Has full health insurance coverage (that covers the family members too) for all the benefits of the respective categories of insured nationals. c) Fulfills the requirements for the integration into Greek society. The long-term resident’s residence permit is valid for five years and can be renewed for five years each time.
