Residence Permit in Greece for Digital Nomads: What Changes Under Law 5275/2026
A significant amendment to the procedure for issuing residence permits to digital nomads has been introduced by the recent Law 5275/2026. In particular, it brings an unwelcome development that renders the submission of the relevant applications more burdensome compared to the regime previously in force.
More specifically, until recently, individuals wishing to apply for a residence permit as digital nomads in Greece could either do so after obtaining a national entry visa (Visa D) from the competent consular authority, or bypass that stage altogether and submit a direct application in Greece for the initial granting of a residence permit. This could be done following their entry into the country either with a uniform short-stay visa or under a visa exemption regime, effectively as tourists, and within the ninety (90) days permitted by law for their stay in Greece under such status. This option was particularly significant, as it relieved applicants of the “burden” of applying to the competent consular authorities for the issuance of a national entry visa, thereby making the process both faster and more cost-effective.
Under the new Law 5275/2026, this possibility has now been entirely abolished. Consequently, applicants are required to obtain a national entry visa as digital nomads (Visa Type D) in order to enter the country and submit an application for the granting of a residence permit as digital nomads. Therefore, any individual who now wishes to reside in Greece as a digital nomad must enter the country holding a national entry visa (Visa Type D) of the corresponding category.
